Before we bought our home, the owners had a bonus third garage built with a bonus room above. The bonus room is attached to our bedroom and so far in our 4 years in this home it has been used for many things! It started out as a workout room (that is what the former owners used it for) that was filled with mirrors and was painted a light yellow color. When I had my two babies, we transitioned it into a temporary nursery filled with all things baby for those late night feedings.

Here’s the yellow room before with the woodwork being primed. I am a fan of ivory painted woodwork. Ours is painted Ivory Lace by Sherwin Williams. I paint all of my woodwork this color.

Here are the 3 closet doors being primed. I use one for craft items, one as a linen closet, and the middle one for baby item storage.
The ceiling was actually this light blue color– so weird to me! I am used to white ceilings, so we painted them white.

Now we have turned the bonus room into a library/tv/game room for mommy and daddy. A kid-free zone that is nice and relaxing. We painted the room Tame Teal by Sherwin Williams. A friend of mine had her bedroom painted that color and I loved it. It reminds me of the beach, so it is bright yet relaxing at the same time. We added two Hemnes bookcases and a Hemnes TV unit in white from IKEA to give the feel of built-in shelving without them actually being built-ins. The shelf on top of the window was pre-existing and we just painted it to match.

One corner of the room currently holds my crafting materials, like my grandmother’s sewing machine and my Cricut. That closet holds my crafting items like cloth, scrapbooking paper, and others. I would eventually like to put this somewhere else in my house, but I’m afraid if I put it in the basement I’ll never go down there to craft. So for now it’s here.

The other corner of the room houses the TV and my stash of handbags. See the lovely dress form? My mother got this for me one year for Christmas. I love it and I’m pretty sure Shawn hates it. 🙂 It’s too cute to part with!

One of my favorite items in the room is this pillow that says “God bless the whole world- no exceptions.” What a great reminder. Remember this chair? I recovered it as one of my projects. This beautiful mission style table was given to me by my parents. I love the stained glass design on the top. Because I painted the wood work in the room white, this is the only natural wood color and I think it really pops.

I used to love this wing-back chair before my cat got hold of it! He pretty much shredded one corner of it (before we had him declawed) and it’s not so white anymore. I’m on the lookout for a nice slipcover to fit over it and cover the mess he made of it.

All in all, I love our bonus room. I need to get some more decor in the room on the walls, so that is a work in progress.

What do you think of my bonus room? Mine has had so many different functions over the years from workout room to baby room to game room. What do you use yours for?
