Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you’ve loved our same-medium projects this week as we’ve demonstrated different ways to use old books in crafts/decorating. Today is my turn, and I’m going to show you how I painted old books to make some cheap but adorable decor for my boys’ shared bedroom.

I first saw this project on one of my favorite blogs, The Band Wife. I fell in love with the project because it is super inexpensive but can be personalized for anyone. And since I’ll soon be moving my two little boys into the same bedroom, I’m looking for cheap ways to add boy-friendly decor to their room.

So here’s how I made some painted books!

I started with five old books that of course I found in my own library. They were getting weeded out of the collection, so they were free finds!

HHH Tip: Buy old books at library sales. They are very inexpensive and often in great condition. Most libraries have a sale about once a quarter and some have ongoing sales.

These are the paint colors I chose for the books; I think I’ll be using them in the boys’ room color scheme, so they were an easy choice. This is just simple acrylic paint that I picked up at JoAnn’s.

The paint easily covered the books in 2 coats.

Then I called my friend Ariel. Ariel is one of my best buddies and an A-MAZING photographer. She has an art degree and can literally turn ANYTHING into something beautiful. So I knew that her handwriting was going to be so much better than mine for this next step. And I have no shame in this–if you know someone is better than you and can help you out, take advantage of it!

Ariel and I came up with five fake titles for the books. All of the titles relate to my boys somehow; I love the idea of having book titles that mean something. Ariel used a simple black paint pen (which was washable in case of mess-ups!) to write the titles in various fonts on the book spines.

How adorable are these?! Didn’t they turn out so great?! These will go on a bookshelf that I’ll soon be building for the boys’ room.

Simple, cheap (the paint cost me about $7) and even trendy–a great project for old books!

Leave a comment to let me know what you think! What titles would you choose to represent YOU?
